Hello {FIRST_NAME|A4K Fan}

October Athlete of the Month ~ An A4K Success Story

IMG_20150616_203020 (1)
This month, we are not just going to share the story of one athlete, but a whole family of young athletes who have been supported by A4K in the past. We recently heard from Maureen Clironomos, mother of 5 kids, who reached out to thank Athletics 4 Kids for helping her children stay involved in sports: “Sports has kept my kids healthy and has taught them the values that I wanted them to have: sportsmanship, team playing, hard work, commitment….” She shared that when the children’s dad died in the summer of 2006, they were 5,7,9,11 and 13, and life went into complete turmoil: they lost their house, their car and any financial security, and a friend referred her to A4K.
Through the following years, all of her 5 children were able to take part in sports because A4K was there to help; they all excelled,  the boys playing soccer and rugby,(often serving as captains of their respective teams) and her daughter playing soccer and field hockey. Maureen credits much of their success in life off the field, to the lessons they learned playing sports: their accomplishments include honour roll status in high school, scholarships to University, extensive travel with their various sports teams for which they did their own fundraising, recognition and promotion in their various jobs and career pursuits, as well as being great contributors to their communities, and productive, responsible and caring human beings generally!
Maureen says: “I am so proud of them. And I truly believe, I know, that, because they have been athletes since their early childhood, they have avoided some of the pitfalls that young people can fall into. Being in sports has kept them busy, focused, involved in their community, and healthy.”
A4K is proud to know the Clironomos family and wishes each of them, every success in their ongoing sporting pursuits and life endeavours.

 Thank You Westminster Savings
After being chosen in late 2014 by the Tri-Cities Employees and Members as the charity of choice in Westminster Savings “Choose your Charity challenge”, A4K made application for community funding in 2015 through the Westminster Savings Foundation.  We have recently learned that our application for $10,000 towards funding our youth sports granting program has been approved! These funds will assist families all over the Lower Mainland, in Municipalities where Westminster Savings has branches.  A4K and these A4K families so much appreciate this assistance-these funds will put close to  50 children into the sporting programs of their dreams!

Fishing Derby Recap

Once again the District of North Vancouver Firefighters came through with an amazing event and some fantastic support for Athletics for Kids.  On September 25th they held their annual fishing derby at the Lions Gate Marina and what a great day for fishing, fun and fabulous prizes!  Each of the two charities involved received a cheque for $9,000- a record fundraiser for the Derby. Thanks so much to Nathan, Ron, Oliver and Mike as well as the rest of the crew for all their great efforts and for being such wonderful supporters of Athletics 4 Kids.
Singleton Urquhart LLP Golf Tourney

Once again, Singleton Urquhart LLP has come through big-time for Athletics 4 Kids at their annual golf tournament, recently held on the 24th of September at the beautiful Morgan Creek golf course in south Surrey. Raising $6,000 for each of their charities of choice, A4K would like to thank all the participants at the tournament (staff, lawyers, clients, and suppliers) for their support and contribution to this great event.  Over the past few years, Singleton Urquhart has consistently raised over $5,000 each year to support our A4K sports granting program.  Thank you to all the event organizers and participants for making this happen and for choosing A4K as one of your charitable recipients.

Mars Canada 7/11

Thanks for the amazing support from new partners Mars Canada and 7-11 who raised funds for A4K this past summer through their sales of Mars products and slurpees!  Spearheaded by Mathew Javan-Sehati,  Raj Kapoor, Suba Naganathan and A4K Vice-President Ryan Brown, these organizations raised $15,000 through the months of July and August to help A4K put more kids into sports programs. Thank you as well, to all the customers who participated in this campaign! We could not have done it without you!!

West Van Lawn Bowling Club
Thanks to the West Vancouver Lawn Bowling Club for their recent donation to A4K, and for helping us put more kids into sports; we first met the great folks at the WVLBC this past August when they teamed up with Matt Cavelti and Jamie Milliken to host the first annual A4K Lawn Bowling Classic. President Tim Mason, (National Team member, representing Canada at the 2014 Commonwealth Games), Board members and volunteers from the Club were delighted to see so many young people filling the greens, having a wonderful time, and supporting those less fortunate than themselves.  Among the guests at the August event were many West Vancouver families, including the Caveltis, the Reinharts and the Sekhons.  Thank you to all of them, and to the WVLBC for helping to make the event such a great success- the first of many A4K Lawn Bowling Classics!

A4K President Kimberly MacAulay and Executive Director Sandy Hancock recently had the pleasure of attending the Ronald McDonald House Night to Dream Gala, this year honouring Suki and Desha Sekhon, in acknowledgement of all their support, contributions and hard work over the past years. It was a glamorous and exciting event and A4K was proud to be part of the celebrations.

How many of you remember the movie Forrest Gump?  For me, this was a great movie because of, in part, the wonderful lessons it delivered. For example; Forrest had learned from his mother that “Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re gonna get”.  For Forrest, it did not matter what life threw at him or what he got because he always dealt with whatever showed up in the same way; he was all in, fully committed and gave everything his very best.  Forrest committed to everything he took on without attachment because he was not concerned with the results of his actions.  Forrest did not care about winning or success.  He did things for the love of doing it, and this allowed Forrest to be fully present with whatever he did.  And guess what?  This commitment and attitude caused Forrest to be enormously successful. For instance, Forrest became a terrific football star, a world class ping pong player, ran until his beard reached the ground, was Vietnam War hero, caught shrimp by the boat load and became very rich, etc.  Forrest is a true leader yet he looked like a weak person.  Looks can definitely be deceiving, and Forest taught us all a great deal about how to live a life of magnificence. He was passionate about what he chose to do and he accepted everything that came his way and dealt with it beautifully. If I had to put words in Forrest's mouth he would say; My life, my power, no excuses. He just did it. Learn from Forrest. You will be glad you did.
