May Athlete of the Month-Lucy Wheeler
This month’s athlete is hard-working teenager Lucy Wheeler, who has learned some amazing life-lessons during her tenure as a field hockey player and goaltender. Sport has helped her develop as an athlete but also as a person, teammate and responsible member of the community. Lucy says: “ Field Hockey provides an environment where I can try my best and take responsibility for myself. In games, I try 100% and I don't regret anything or blame anyone - we work as a team. I have had the opportunity to try a new sport, and different positions (i.e. goalkeeper) than I am used to. It is my favorite sport and I hope to keep playing it for many years.” Lucy’s mother Gillian has observed her daughter blossom through sport:“Lucy has benefited from participation in field hockey in a number of ways. Initially the coach asked for volunteers to play in goal and, despite having no experience, she decided to try this. We, thus, discovered an unexpected talent for goalkeeping. Sport has also helped her develop mental skills in: organization, taking responsibility for herself, commitment to others, dedication to a team, the ability to triumph over failure, and sheer tenacity. Positive physical effects are development of hand-eye coordination, general conditioning and balance along with a good dose of fun no matter what the weather! She is proud to represent her team and sees year after year the development of her skills.”
Congratulations to Lucy on earning A4K’s Athlete of the Month for May 2015!!

Thank You SVP and BPS Wealth Management
Athletics for Kids is honoured to be included as one of the investees ofSVPVancouver! SVP has been supporting A4K since 2012, and assisted with financial needs as well as non-financial requirements: projects and strategy sessions, including a 5 year business plan, a Fundraising audit and long term marketing overview, as well as a huge number of other campaigns. We are very fortunate to have recently been awarded further funding from SVP for the hiring of a part-time marketing and communications staff member, production materials and implementation of a CRM tool: a total of $35,000! We much appreciate the co-funding ($10,500) this latest grant included, provided by SVP’s new partner, BPS Wealth Management at CIBC Wood Gundy. SVP has been central to the growth and development of A4K through the past 3 years, and continues to be a huge support and resource for our Charity. A very special thanks to our lead partner and liaison, Dan Bowditch and to SVP Vancouver’s Executive Director Tanya Oliva for their endless energy and amazing contributions over the past years.

A4K Gala Results

Just recently, we celebrated our 14th year of putting kids into sports at our annual Boxing Gala held May 1st at the beautiful Hollyburn Country Club in West Vancouver. This year our Gala raised more than ever before -close to $130,000!! Our guests were treated to a lively evening which included a martini reception, some entertaining casino games, a gourmet dinner created by Executive Chef Jerry Fyfe, 3 very exciting live amateur boxing matches, wonderful live and silent auctions and some great music! We were privileged this year to partner with Capilano Builders, who donated a $25,000 cabinet renovation in addition to their sponsorship and a number of amazing auction items. A very special thanks to Capilano Builders, and to all of our sponsors and suppliers, as well as our fantastic volunteers. And to all our wonderful donors and guests, thank you for making our gala such a success and for helping us put hundreds of BC kids in the game … we absolutely could not have done it without you!
