Hello {FIRST_NAME|A4K Fan}
June Athlete of the Month-Matthew Greer
matthew greer pitching 3This month, A4K is recognizing an athlete who has made his mark in a number of sports including bowling and baseball. A long-time recipient of A4K grants, Matthew Greer has earned his designation as A4K’s June Athlete of the Month.

This past league season, Matthew maintained a bowling average of over 200, bowled a high game of 362 and high triple of 789. He also bowled his way into the YBC Provincial Singles event this past February and proudly took 3rd place.

According to Matthew, “Baseball is a huge part of my life and I am playing for the Kelowna Cubs Midget AAA team. I am a Pitcher, play Short Stop, 3rd base, and Catcher. Playing ball at an elite level is competitive and a lot of fun. I hope to gain a scholarship and go to college or university and continue to play baseball. Thank you A4K for helping me play the sports I love!”

We tend to compare ourselves to others regularly. This process really distracts us from developing our potential. For example: he is faster than me and I can never win, we got beat today and we suck, I always lose against my sister, they are bigger than us and we have no chance, I am bigger than her and I should do great....Comparison is difficult to give up. It seems to be our nature. However it is important that we do give up all comparisons in our lives. Comparison is measurement. When we measure ourselves we go to a place where we consider ourselves to be better than or less than. Neither works for our growth and empowerment. When we compare we evaluate ourselves externally. And we fail before we even start. What matters is how we feel about ourselves. Our self worth will not develop based on where we see ourselves in relation to others. Our self worth is based on how we feel about ourselves in relation to ourselves. I ask myself, "Am I showing up here? Am I giving my best?" If I am, then whatever happens I am alright with the results even if, or maybe, especially, because I may have finished last (being at the bottom of a group may be the best thing for me because it signals I have stepped up into a level where others are much more experienced).
When I give up comparison completely I stand completely alone. I am accountable for how I feel about myself, I am whole. I get to see my own progress and that is what matters. I do not care what others think of me. I get to play at a level I may not feel I am ready for. All I need to do is to see if I am progressing and if not, understand why not and change my behaviour. Comparison is a trap. Give it up willingly. And empower yourself.
