It has been an incredibly busy and exciting month at A4K this August, with a record number of events happening back to back! We wanted to take this opportunity to say a huge thanks to everyone who helped us make this such a productive and successful month: all our sponsors, volunteers, event leaders, and participants – we could not have done it all without your support, energy and huge efforts! |

August Athlete of the Month ~Jasper Vanweelderen~ 
We decided to do something a little different this month when we were deliberating on our chosen athlete for August. It was over 12 months ago when we first received an inspiring note from Jasper Vanweelderen, then a 12 year old boy with a BIG vision and a huge heart. Jasper explained that on his Bar-Mitzvah, he wanted to find a special way of giving back to the community, and because he had always played and loved sports, he wanted to partner with A4K to help make sure more kids got a chance to take part in sporting activities. His idea was to hold a skimboard event in Vancouver with participants showing off their skills and techniques, and ask his friends, family and skimboarding community to make a donation to A4K to help him celebrate.
Over the following months, Jasper was extremely diligent in co-ordinating his event and showed great leadership and organizational skills as he planned and marketed for his August 15th Spanish Banks Skimboarding “Jam” ; he did all the work himself, garnering publicity, getting participants signed up, and designing the course and various ramps and jumps. While he had the full support of his family, this young man single-handedly brought the event to life, asking nothing for himself, but requesting that donations be made to Athletics for Kids rather than any gifts coming to him-quite an extraordinary and selfless decision. Through the summer of 2015, donations started to arrive from all over North America, where Jasper’s family and friends reside…it was amazing to see Jasper’s vision being fulfilled. By the time his skimboarding jam was done, Jasper’s efforts had resulted in almost $2,000 being donated to A4K; this young man can proudly say that he has funded enough kids to field a whole baseball team onto the pitch this summer….quite an accomplishment for a 13 year old! Everyone at A4K is in awe of what Jasper has been able to do and extends a huge thank you for all the fantastic energy and inspiration he has provided. Congratulations Jasper!!!! |

A4K Charity Golf Invitational %20(2)%202.jpg "A4K Invitational (black) (2) 2")  On August 10th, the second annual A4K Charity golf tournament was held at Quilchena Golf & Country Club in Richmond. Spear-headed by Scott Trotter, Mary Quinn and the wonderful people at Staub Electronics along with A4K Vice President and Energizer Ryan Brown, this years’ event was another huge success in every way: everyone had a ton of fun, lots of great contacts were made, fantastic food and refreshments were served throughout, and it broke records as a fundraiser! Major sponsors Staub Electronics, ADS, Firstech, SnapAV, Vision33, and Coast Capital Savings along with a host of other wonderful sponsors and contributors helped to raise a net of over $65,000 for Athletics 4 Kids!! Thanks to everyone who participated in the event and gave so generously to partake in the hole activities, silent auction and creative contests on course. Many thanks also, to Twist Conditioning and the professional athletes they rallied to join in the fun, and to all of our suppliers and silent auction donors! Adult Volleyball Tournament
 The first annual A4K volleyball tournament took place at the City of North Van “Shipyards “sand courts on the 15th of August and while it was not a brilliantly sunny day, there were some incredible shining moments on the beach as over 60 players went head to head, 4 vs 4!
Special thanks to event organizers Kari Ostevik and Ashley Thorne and to volunteers Heather Fleming and Tanya Oliva for running the concession and providing general back-up and support. Also, big thanks to our sponsor Thrifty Foods, and to the Tap & Barrel, the Vancouver Canadians Professional Baseball Club, and North shore Beach Volleyball for prizing. A ton of fun was had by all, and almost $1,000 was raised at this year’s event…..a great start to a fantastic new tradition!!  See full album of photos on home page a4k.ca (click Picaso)

West Van Lawn Bowling Classic   August 15th was a very busy day for A4K this summer, with yet another inaugural event taking place on this magic date: The first annual West Van Lawn Bowling Classic! Talk about a great evening full of frivolity, costumes, great food, fierce competition on the pitch and more laughter than should be allowed at any one event!
Comrades Matt Cavelti and Jamie Milliken did a fabulous job organizing a great community event, where participants of all ages came together to have an evening of enjoyment and raise funds for A4K. Thanks to the great people at the West Van Lawn Bowling Club for hosting, to La Taqueria for joining us with their fabulous taco selection, and to Carlsberg Canada for helping with some of the liquid refreshments. With generous support from many West Van families, this “first annual” raised a net of almost $5,000 to support kids from low income families to take part in the sports programs they love! A very special shout out to the Vancouver Canadians Professional Baseball Club for their donation of hundreds of tickets to their games this season; these tickets were distributed to our A4K families throughout the Lower Mainland, and very much enjoyed by everyone who attended!! |

Odlum Brown VanOpen  For the first time ever, A4K was invited to join the excitement at the Odlum Brown VanOpen Tennis championships, held August 15th to 23rd at the beautiful Hollyburn Country Club.
It was a great experience for Athletics 4 Kids to see the action and bring awareness of our cause to the thousands of attendees who came to see athletes from around the world compete in this world-class event. Special thanks to past A4K President Chris Obst for introducing A4K to the wonderful Executive at Hollyburn country Club, and to the Odlum Brown organizing and event crew for their support and assistance throughout. Raffle prizing was provided by Odlum Brown, Toy Traders, Ecomarine Ocean Kayak Centre and the Vancouver Canadians….many thanks! |
